A Camping We Will Go

Pin It Now!
One of my favorite things the Mr. and I do together is our annual camping trip.

He is a seasoned professional so that makes it much easier {on myself}. Boy Scout, baby! We set out Wednesday to our favorite camping destination, Devil's Lake, for four days of pure relaxation and fresh air. Here's where we called home while we were there.

Packing and prep for our camping trip always gets me excited! Making the menu, grocery shopping, bringing the "camping bins" up from the basement along with all the necessary gear, and loading up the car. We pack that sucker full, top to bottom, inside and out. We kind of look like hillbillies I think.

{Exhibit A: The Mr. had to pull over to strap the bikes down a little tighter}

Wednesday around dinner time a nasty storm moved in with a forecast of quarter size hail and 70 mph winds. We I was freaking out. We decided to ditch the campsite and head to Walmart to ride out the storm.

We browsed the aisles for a good hour and would periodically head to the front of the store to see how the storm was looking. Sheets of rain, wind gusts, and eerie green/black skies is the only way I can describe it. The shopping carts were strewn about the parking lot and the lightning was unbelievable! It was intense.

I am so glad we were able to find shelter other than the tent. After it died down and was only raining we headed back to check on the campsite. We found everything the way we left it, thank God. We prayed like crazy on the way to Walmart and were very relieved to find everything safely in the tent. We had a little water in the corners of the tent, but nothing a towel couldn't handle.

The positive side of it all is that we made the best of it. We found a Word Search book at Walmart and a pad of paper which came in handy for the rest of our time there. We sat in the car in the pouring down rain and ate Subway sandwiches for dinner and just chatted. It was nice.

 Here we are Thursday morning. The Mr. is cooking us up a yummy breakfast of eggs, bacon, and breakfast potatoes.

One of the best features Devil's Lake has to offer are the cliffs, complete with hiking trails. We filled up our hydration backpack and started our two hour hike. I voted for the easy side of the cliffs this year.

The Mr. was busy snapping pics for the blog {how sweet} while I was huffing and puffing up the straight incline. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and foggy the morning of our hike, but still beautiful.

 The rest of the time was spent eating picnic lunches at the lake, people watching, eating lots of yummy food, biking, getting up at 1am with flashlight in hand for potty runs, campfires, making pudgy pies and smores, showering with spiders, playing all sorts of games {Canasta, Golf {the card game}, Cribbage {our all time favorite}, and Carcassonne}. Oh, and I can't possibly forget enjoying the melodic songs death calls of the pretty annoying birds. If you've ever camped you know what I am talking about. They wake up at 5am on the dot to bring you a very loud spectacle of their talents.

There was also a lot of this going on. I am addicted to Word Search. It's a problem really.

  We'll head out again for another camping trip sometime in fall, hopefully!
